Weekend in Paris!

Me in front of the Eiffel Tower!

Hi Everybody!!! I literally just got off the train from Paris, while maybe forty five minutes ago and there was so much that I wanted to let you all know about what happened this weekend while I was in Paris!

                                                                   Arc de Triomphe

So Friday our train left at 5:25am and we were on our way! We were in Paris by 8:30am and the time was so crazy this weekend. Not only did we go into a different time zone so we went ahead an hour but Sunday was daylight savings time here and so we went ahead another hour, only to go back an hour when we got back to London. When we got off the train at Paris-Nord, we decided to walk to the Arc de Triomphe because I overestimated the ease of walking there from the train station. In time we arrived and saw our first Parisian landmark! From there we ate lunch on our way to the Eiffel Tower at a little cafe. We continued walking and we reached the Eiffel Tower. Seeing this was not a mind-blowing as I thought that it was going to be which was interesting. Nikki and I were talking about the fact that maybe if we were coming from the states it would have been more of an amazing moment but because we live in Europe for some reason that hindered our view. It is a weird way of thinking but somehow it makes some sense. One thing we were blown away by was the temperature! Friday it was almost 80 degrees!!! We didn't have to wear our coats!, although it was another thing we had to carry because we had not checked into our hostel/hotel yet. From the Eiffel Tower we found the Metro and bought 3 day passes that gave us unlimited access to riding the Metro. We venture to North Paris to find our hotel and got a little lost, in a sketchy neighborhood, and then discovered that we were going in the wrong direction and needed to turn around. Once we did we entered a nicer side of the neighborhood and found our hotel and dropped off our bags, rested for a minute and then headed back out to conquer more of the city. That night we saw a couple of the sights lit up and walked around the city.

                                                             Chateau de Versailles

Saturday morning we decided to take the Metro to Versailles. We went to the chateau de versailles and walked around in the again amazing weather! In the early afternoon we headed back into the city and went to the Louvre. I was amazed at how much I liked it. There we so many ancient Greek sculptures and ancient Egyptian artifacts that I was so excited every time we walked into a new room. We got to see the Mona Lisa and the Code of Hammurabi among so many other things. From the Louvre we darted back to our hotel as fast as we could to eat, and get ready to go on our Illuminations bus tour followed by a show at the Moulin Rouge. On our way back it started to rain and slowed us down a little bit but eventually we made it to the meeting point on time. However, the company had made a mistake with our booking and while it said four adults on our conformation sheet, they had only booked two. Fortunately, for them lol, they were able to get two more seats at Moulin Rouge and we all got on the bus and headed off to start the adventure! The bus tour was acceptable, we drove around and saw most of the sightseeing landmarks at night and then we got onto a river cruise because we were going to see the 11pm show at Moulin Rouge and that was miserable. Not only had it started raining again but the boat was incredibly overcrowded and we ended up sitting on the stairs at random spots on the boat. After we got off the  boat we made our way to Moulin Rouge where we stood in line and waited in the rain for them to let us into the show. We got in and it was amazing, and very much smaller than I expected! It almost had a big top vibe to it and it was cool, we were all squished together but all happy to be there! We got complementary champagne and watched the "Feerie" show which seemed completely random but I think it was because I didn't speak French so I had no idea what they were saying! The costumes were quite extravagant and revealing and overall it was a great experience. When we got out of the show, it was 2am but it turned into 3am with the time change which was fun :).

                                                                 The Moulin Rouge

Sunday morning we slept in a little bit and then packed up and went to the Musee de Orsay, an art museum that we toured for a short while before heading to Notre Dame. At Notre Dame we took pictures, walked inside, and ate crepes outside before having lunch and heading back to Nord to catch our train back to Paris. There is much commentary that I am leaving out, however, I am tired and lazy right now so if you would like to know more let me know! I will say though that I am happy to be back in London and Spring Break is right around the corner! Bye for now -Meg

February and March Adventures! Sorry it's sooo late!!

I can't believe that it has already been a month and a half into my study abroad experience! It feels like it has been much longer but at the same time seems to have gone by quickly. The things that I have noticed recently are things that have been striking me odd since I first got here and now that I have lived here for a while I feel that I can comment on some of them.
First, the fire hydrants are underground! to me that doesn't make much sense seeing as how the fires are above ground but it wouldn't matter anyway because people don't generally get out of the way for the emergency services when they come flying down the street. There are so many cars in the road that it generally is nearly impossible to make a hole for the ambulances and such to come through. Also, apparently even though they have national healthcare, getting in to see a doctor is completely ridiculous. It might take days for you to see one even if you are sick today, unless you go to and A&E which i gather is the same as an ER at home.
Second, everyone is in such a rush all the time, I may have mentioned this before but now i am starting to notice that i have somewhat adapted to their pace, which was more like my own speed walking pace anyway but somehow all together more rushed. And the Tube!!! I am starting to understand why people complain about the tube. In the beginning of my journey the tube was an amazing creation that i wished we had at home (well where i live anyway) and now while i still love it and love not driving, I have on more than one occasion been completely squished and desperately wanted to get off, also if you attempt to make it to Algate or Liverpool Street around 9:00 in the morning, don't plan on getting there fast. I realize that you don't know where those stations are but I will help with that. Anyway, that is where a number of people work and that is about the time everyone tries to get there. It is also the time that i have to go to school 2 of the 3 days a week. I can't complain about having school only 3 days a week though. Especially since i generally only have one class a day.
Here is a tube map in case anyone gets ambitious and wants to find out where i am.

Let me tell you about my campus, if you could call it that. It is a mixture of buildings that are scattered from Algate East to Algate and are not easy to find, there are in some interesting looking areas and are interesting looking buildings themselves...not some place that i would think is a university. Each campus (north and city) has a bar as the student center and people start drinking far earlier than 5pm...so Jimmy Buffett, feel free to drink whenever you want!!! One thing I will say that I love about the university is the library! I know, me loving a library! but the library is fully stocked with the textbooks and supplementary materials for each module (class). There is one textbook that I will eventually buy but that is only because i want to, and even then it is soooooo much less expensive than it is in the states.
All of their sandwiches come with mayo on them and i discovered that I like cheesecake! There is also something else that i have been eating but...oh, tortellini and wine, and chocolate, oh my gosh the chocolate here is amazing and I love it so much, I don't think that i have ever eaten this much chocolate in my life!

Now on to the stuff you all really care about! My adventures! I will start from 19th of February and bring you up to speed! Wow it really has been a long time since I have blogged! SORRY guys!!! I will try to be better about keeping up with it J
Saturday 19th February was the day that we went to Windsor Castle. It was pretty awesome because somewhere in there the Queen herself was in residence. I tried my hardest to look through the windows when our guide pointed out where her apartments were but I was unable to see her. It was amazing to be walking around in a real life, working castle. I told my friends that I wish I was important enough to see the rest of the castle not just the tourist parts! I can only imagine what it looks like knowing what the part we were in looks like. It was much larger than I imagined and you just felt royal being in there. My pictures have been up for a while so I think some of you will understand my feeling, I didn’t want to leave it was so beautiful!
Sometime in the month of February I purchased my train tickets for Paris which I will be leaving for on the 25th of March and coming back to London on the 27th. The 20th of February I went to Hillsong Church London for the first time and was completely blown away! It was like being at church at home except on a much bigger level! The people there were so nice and made me feel like I belonged from the moment I walked in which was a comfort because I had no idea what I was doing. It is in the Dominion Theatre where during the week they show a musical, We Will Rock You. The music is fantastic, the atmosphere is great and the messages are really uplifting and just what I needed! I haven’t been in the past two weeks because of Scotland and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade but I will return this week and see what is in store next!

The theater where Church is...craziness right?

On the 23rd, I went to this place called the London Trocadero which is this crazy arcade, cinema, laser tag, bowling food/bar place! It is quite fun to be in there and to do some of the things there as well, while I have not fully indulged in all the Trocadero has to offer, I will be back to investigate further!
On the 26th, we had a group GSE trip to Oxford! I was so nice to get out of London for a little while and see what life is like in a ‘university town’. Apparently there is a difference between living there and visiting because if you are visiting then you are at Oxford but if you are living there you are in Oxford. The more I think about it however, the more I feel I may have gotten those two mixed up. The most wonderful thing of the day, besides the amazing architecture, was all the Harry Potter sites!!! We went into the Great Hall, stood on the stairs in which the first years did while waiting to enter the Great Hall to be sorted into their houses, and Sarah and I were in awe the entire time and couldn’t stop giggling! What was better was as soon as we entered the room with the stairs someone started whistling the Harry Potter theme song and it was like we were in the movie! My pictures from this trip have also been up so feel free to relive the moments as I am in my head right now! Got to wander around the grounds of some of the colleges that make up the University of Oxford, because much to my surprise the University of Oxford is an umbrella term for something like 23 different smaller colleges in the town that all receive degrees from Oxford upon graduation. I am sure there are other things that I am missing from this trip but I don’t remember right now…
Then came March! Oh how time flies! The first weekend in March, GSE headed off to Edinburgh, Scotland! This trip was so incredible!!!! To be out of the city and see countryside and get some fresh air, we were still in a city but it is far less crowded and city like than London. We got there by train Friday night and checked into the Best Western Edinburgh City, before going to get Italian for dinner. After dinner we went to a pub called Seven Sisters and had a drink and enjoyed being in Scotland! There were so many Hen and Bachelor parties there that we didn’t stay too long and left by 11:30pm. Hen parties are the same as Bachelorette parties except everyone is dressed way cooler! We returned to the hotel for the night and slept in our amazing beds and watched some crazy TV before finally turning in for the night. Saturday we went on a bus tour of Edinburgh and saw most of what the town had to offer and then went in to Edinburgh Castle and wandered around taking crazy pictures and soaking in the view! When we decided we were done in the castle we went and saw a street performer that swallowed a sword and had a guy stand on top of a bed of nails on top of him while swallowing fire (I  hope that made sense!). When he was finished we met up with Sarah’s friend Sarah who is studying in Edinburgh for the year…we ate lunch and walked around and went to a few souvenir shops too. I got an awesome sweatshirt to add to my collection! We also went to the cafĂ© were J.K. Rowling wrote the first couple chapters of some of the early books! We went back to the hotel to relax for a little while before heading out to dinner at an Indian or Thai restaurant. I was surprised at how much I liked the food! It was good and we had fun trying to explain to our program director Mike what Twilight was all about. It broke down something like this…there are veggie vampires and non-veggie vampires, somehow a human gets pregnant and there is some fighting, the sparkle and live happily ever after. We were the loudest in the restaurant and it was hilarious!! After dinner we went to the University of Edinburgh student union pub and had some drinks to celebrate the birthdays of two of our group members who happen to be best friends! On the way home we walked through a graveyard and it was not spooky even though some of the group thought it was lol. Sunday we when down for breakfast and then packed and got back on the train to head back to London; it was kind of sad to leave Scotland because there was so much that we had left undone but what was weirder was feeling like we were going home, and thinking London was home.
Monday the 7th, I went with my class to the German Embassy and learned about what they do in terms of Public and Cultural Diplomacy and that is pretty much all I will say about that other than my directional skills rock and I got us back to the Tube from the Embassy when we were done!
Wednesday the 9th we (GSE) went to the theatre! We saw Blood Brothers the musical and it was good! It was a British comedy and was funny until about ¾ of the way through when it started to get repetitive and I didn’t like it when they grew up. The mom was singing about Marilyn Monroe in her songs and now it seems like everywhere we go, Marilyn Monroe is somewhere to be found. We got to get all dressed up and had the first row of seats in the balcony so we didn’t have to look over anyone’s head!
Saturday the 12th, we took a bus tour to Stonehenge and Bath. It was absolutely brilliant to be outside in the countryside and see blue sky, fresh air and grass!  Sarah and I were taking random nature pictures all day! This day was the day that I was the sickest since being here and while I was blowing my nose all day, the fresh air was amazing! Anyway back to the stones. Surprisingly they were smaller than I imagined but magnificent none the less. No one really knows how they got there, whether it was aliens or some ancient civilization or something, either way they had to be strong and have some pretty good way of rigging those stones on top of each other. We spent around 45 minutes in Stonehenge and then traveled on to Bath. Along the way we were travelling through some land owned by the British Military and saw some tank crossings and a ‘secret’ training village that had been bought out and the people were asked to leave to that when training the soldiers can have a more real life experience. I was hoping to see a tank or hear some shooting but I had no such luck L. Arriving in the city of Bath I felt very much what I imagined Italy to be which was weird because we were still in England. The buildings were gorgeous and everything was just so beautiful! My pictures are up as well so you can see what I mean. We went on a tour of the Roman Baths which was cool, not really sure what it actually was other than some kind of bath thing, but it said that you weren’t supposed to touch the water because it was untreated but of course I had to and I stuck the tip of one of my fingers in! I still have it and nothing bad happened so I’m glad that I did! We wandered through there for a while before leaving and embarking on a trip around the city before we had to meet up with our tour again. Sarah and I went to the circus, which is just a fancy way of saying a grass patch with trees that people can sit in, but it was great! I sat on a tree and took some bark that had fallen and soaked in the freshness. I didn’t fully understand how nasty London was until I got here (to Bath and Stonehenge). Don’t get me wrong I still love London but am glad that when I go home in June I do not live in a city. After spending a little time here we went to the Jane Austen Center and had tea in the tea room upstairs! It was splendid! I had the Dashwood Tea with the Jane Austen blend which meant that I got lovely toasted tea cakes with butter and strawberry jam and the Jane Austen blend of tea which was delicious! After this we walked back to the meeting point and waited for our bus and started the two hours journey back to London.
Sunday the 13th was the St. Patrick’s Day Parade! It was so awesome! We, Nikki, Kait and I, made our way to Trafalgar Square and into the crowd that was forming for the parade and festivities! They had a music stage set up and knick-knack stands set up where we got scarfs. They also had bar tents lining both sides and Nikki and I got Guinness’ and were happy. The parade came through and we started snapping pictures all over the place! I think I might have taken a few too many because after when I looked at them I realized that it was basically a panoramic of the entire parade. After coming back to Nido, Nikki and I watched P.S. I Love You because that is the only semi-Irish movie that we have!
That pretty much brings you all the way to today and up to speed on everything that has been happening lately. There are things here and there that I have left out but I figured this was long enough so I will leave it for another blog. I promise to write sooner next time and will probably write when I get back from Paris! Unless something exciting happens between now and then J. So for now I will say goodbye and that I miss you all! –Meghan

P.S. – If there is anything else you wanna know about send me a message or an email! Cheers!

Week 2...Adventures and the Start of School

So this week has been both long and short. School started on Monday and my schedule is Monday afternoon, Tuesday morning and most of the day Wednesday. The way that school works here is that we meet once a week and have an hour lecture and then an hour seminar where we are broken up and assigned to small groups to discuss what we learned in the lecture. The seminars are what I am used to because it is more like my classes at home. My classes seem very interesting and not to intimidating, which is always a plus. I was interested to discover just how few British people were in some of my classes. It seems that either the students are exchange students or students who have come to live here from another country. In that way it is so different from home because even though everyone speaks some level of English, we are all coming from completely different backgrounds and everyone has a different opinion on whatever subject we are talking about. The classes that I am in are Public and Cultural Diplomacy, International Security, Europe in the Global System and Security, Politics and the Environment. One thing that I do love about school here is that it is not necessary to buy textbooks. Most of the textbooks are available as free e-books through the schools library or available through library loan. It is something that I think the US should try doing! I feel as through I will learn a lot more here because the classes are so independent that most of the work is done outside of class through reading books and articles on the extensive reading lists. Alright well enough about the logistics of school, let me tell you about the fun stuff that happened this week! I don't remember if I put this in my last post so I will talk about it briefly, we watched the Super Bowl here and it was so weird because we didn't see any of the commercials. It would go to a British commentary with two Americans and it was hilarious. The half time show was acceptable, at least it wasn't some old guy singing old songs like the past couple years. However, the audio did not match up with the video which made the sound even worse. All complaints aside, it was nice to have a little bit of the US here. However, with the time difference the Super Bowl ended at 3:30am for us. Tuesday we went out and had an interesting experience with one of Sarah's new British friends. Lets just say the bar that we went to was not something any of us ladies had ever been to before and while we had a good laugh, we parted ways with Nat and Stacey and went out in search of some noodles, which we found and they were amazing! Noodles are mine and Nikki's new second favorite thing.Thursday brought the start of my weekend and the first experience of doing laundry. It was quite a hassle. Sarah and I ventured to get detergent and then went to the laundry room where I learned that my card was not activated so I had to have the front desk do that for me and then I was finally able to figure out the contraption that is the laundry system. Needless to say it look probably close to two hours to do my laundry and after that we didn't want to do anything else so we continued our Harry Potter movie gallery and watched Chamber of Secrets. Friday we (Nikki, Sarah and I) took a trip to Poundland, which is a glorified Dollar Store, and bought some things to clean our rooms with. We then took a trip to North Campus to let Sarah get to class and for Nikki and I to have an adventure trying to print things of the computer. Then came the most awesome walking journey I have taken in a long time for multiple reasons. We walked from housing all the way to the River Thames and then took the Tube home. All in all we were walking for almost two hours and saw amazing things, some of which we took pictures of that will be up soon. Nikki and I made an AMAZING discovery on our journey. Pastry Shops. The pastries here are sooooo good and if you go at the end of the day, everything is so cheap because they don't want to throw it away but they can't keep it for tomorrow. We both got a Yum-Yum Donut, which was mind-blowing, and a baguette sandwich which was also very good. All of this came to a pound 55. Saturday was another GSE adventure and we went to the National Gallery and Tate Modern. These were both very interesting art museums but I will say that the Tate Modern was definitely more my thing because the National Gallery was all very old paintings from a very long time ago. However it was interesting to see some of the big names like Monet and other people i forgot, oops. Tate Modern had more modern art, which I'm sure you all guessed, and was fascinating. There was an amazing exhibit with ceramic sunflower seeds, 100 million of them I believe, that were all hand painted by the artist. I will post pictures of that soon. We went to the 7th floor and there was an amazing view from the restaurant where we sat and pondered for a minute the fact that we are all living in London. It still seems surreal sometimes. After getting back to our rooms and relaxing a little, we went out to a local pub and had a great time once again dancing and singing American songs. I am not sure what this next week will hold in store but when I know, you'll know so until then...

The First Week...

Hey Everyone, sorry its been so long since my last post, there has been so much going on! This week was orientation at school on Tuesday-Thursday and we finished with a bus and boat tour on Thursday. That was amazing! The orientations were helpful but the city tour was incredible. We got to see some of the sights and take pictures on the bus and on the boat. I saw Big Ben, the Eye, Parliament, Westminster Abbey, and so much more. As I type pictures are currently being uploaded to my Facebook page. I took so many and can't wait to take so many more. When we got off the boat it was night time so everything was illuminated and it made it even more unforgettable. The architecture here is absolutely breath-taking and a lot of my pictures are of amazing buildings. Friday was the first 'day off' and I went boot shopping with Nikki. We walked up and down Oxford Street, Piccadilly Circus, Angel, and Camden, where we found success. Now we officially fit in with the trend. Friday night was our first GSE Pub Night and it was great. We went to a bistro for dinner and the Porterhouse for drinks and live music. As we got there the Rugby game between England and Wales was finishing and that was an experience that I will never forget. England won and the entire bar was super happy! The music that was playing in the bar was entirely American and they jammed out to tunes like, "Don't Stop Believing", "Sweet Home Alabama", "Valerie", and more. Saturday was our tour of St. Paul's Cathedral and it was something I would recommend to everyone! There was an American chapel inside dedicated to the people that died in World War II and the tour guide wouldn't let us see one date, 1776, because he said it was an unfortunate 'family squabble'. That was the best quote of the trip so far, and we are keeping track of the amazing quotes that we say and that others say. Even though I am afraid of really high heights I successfully climbed to the top of St. Paul's and got some amazing pictures. Today was a very chill day. I slept in super late and then went grocery shopping and am waiting to watch the Super Bowl. Yes, they are actually going to let us watch American Football here. Hahaha. Overall, the pubs are awesome, been to a few this week, the Tube is my new favorite thing. I officially wish that we had on at home, it is awesome walking to a stop, getting off and then getting on when you wanna go home. It is so easy, so clean and all around awesome. I have made some awesome friends and we are traveling together and hanging out and it is phenomenal! I have more to say and more will happen so for now I will say farewell and look at my pics online! I will post again soon! -Meghan
Oh and P.S- I got all my first choice classes! So yeay me!

I'm Here!! Day 1

Oh my gosh...where do I start? So much has already happened today that there is a million things that I could write about. The flight across the pond was better than expected, not full so there was plenty of room to lay down to try to sleep...which I think that I did but I'm not sure for how long. Once landing there was a bit of a hold up with the shuttle to take me to housing, needless to say I talked to people I never met, figured out how to use a British pay phone and made the calls to get me on the shuttle. I met a bunch of other students from other programs that are studying at London Met and we all have an orientation tomorrow afternoon. Once I checked into housing and got to my room I started setting up and realized that packing the most random things are most often the most amazing things you packed, like my iron (yes for my clothes). Then my roommate came, Lauren, who sat in front of me on the shuttle so I at least knew her face which was nice. We proceeded to unpack and set up our new home. Pictures will come soon I just don't feel like doing them right now. After we set up a little, a couple of us ventured out to the grocery store to buy some much needed food. What did I get you ask? Well I got bread for my peanut butter, clementines, a bottle of water and a bag of chips, which should last me a while. Then I took a nap because I was so tired! We had our first GSE (the group I'm with) meeting tonight where we got our phones!!!!! I no longer feel trapped because now I can text my new friends instead of maybe happening to run into them. We ate dinner at a restaurant down the street and got to know everyone a little bit better. Tomorrow we have our first LMU (the school I'm at) registration and orientation where I will hopefully get all my first choice classes. But before that myself, Sarah, Rachel and maybe some of the other group members are headed to Camden Market to get some much needed hangers, pillows and maybe a blanket, the bed stuff that was provided for us is not up to my typical standard so I am going to fix that! Then we are going to go out for a night on the town tomorrow night after registration! I am so happy that I am here and that I am meeting all these new people and having these amazing experiences. I can't wait to share them all with you so stay tuned to my blog for many and more future updates!!! -Meghan

17 Days To Go!

With a mere 17 days left until I leave on my adventure of a lifetime I thought I would start my first official blog. This way I can tell you all about my adventures and let you know what is going on in my life. As most of you know, on January 30th I will leave the U.S to travel to London to study abroad at London Metropolitan University! I will be working on my Political Science degree and taking class in International Relations and Diplomacy. I am so excited for the opportunity to take classes outside those offered at ECSU and look forward to the challenges that they will bring.
I feel like I have been talking about my trip forever and in some ways it has felt like that, months of paperwork, applying for scholarships and working on getting everything ready here it is...finally time to 'officially' pack, I've been collecting for a while :), and start to say my goodbyes. My goodbyes will be rough but they of course will be more like see you later and I am taking pictures to hang in my dorm. This will be the first time that I am 'flying solo' so to speak because as we all know I commute back and forth to Eastern and I am so looking forward to meeting people and enjoying the experience! I have gotten a chance to talk to some of the people that I will be going with and they are all as excited as I am and they are super awesome and it is going to be an amazing and life changing four months!!
I will be posting some pictures here on the blog but probably a lot more through my Facebook page so look there for more pics over the course of my trip! Here are a few to get you all started...

So this is the picture of what my room will look like according to the housing website!!! I am so excited to see what it actually looks like, what my view is, who my roommate is and to of course move in!

Look forward to more to come but for now I will say goodbye :) -Meghan
